Dear Toothlife, how do you keep a root canal healthy?

I’m graduating this month and I’m wondering about root canals, and how my patients can help keep them healthy. Any tips I can use? ~Emily

Hey Emily! @Toothlife.Irene here!

Congratulations! As you step into the professional world, it's crucial to ensure your patients receive the best possible dental care, and a common concern that arises is how to spot the initial signs, how to assess the health of a root canal, and how to maintain its well-being.

The good news is: you’re definitely in luck. There are a number of checks and tests that you can perform on your patient that will provide you with insight as to what’s going on inside that tooth! In our Does My Patient Need A Root Canal? entry, we break down the steps and methods that you can use to help spot the signs of a tooth in need of a root canal. We also have a downloadable resource available for you, that can be added to a device or printed and laminated for use right inside the operatory.

As a new grad, you're well aware that these procedures are true superheroes for damaged or infected teeth. When performing a root canal treatment, we remove the pulp—those delicate nerves and blood vessels—from inside the tooth. Afterward, we carefully clean, disinfect and seal the tooth to prevent any further complications. It's important to remember that even after a successful root canal treatment, monitoring its health is crucial for long-term success.

Once our job is done, it is then up to our patients to monitor their oral health at home, and report any new changes back to us! By paying attention to potential warning signs and conducting regular assessments, we can detect any issues early on, providing timely intervention and preventing further complications.

Here are some steps you can look for and even pass along to your patients to help with assessing the health of their root canal:

  1. Pain or Sensitivity
    • Persistent or recurring pain and sensitivity, especially when biting down or applying pressure, can indicate problems with a root canal.
    • Be attentive to any discomfort in the treated tooth or the surrounding area.
  2. Swelling or Gum Inflammation
    • Monitor your gums for any swelling, redness, or tenderness.
    • These symptoms might suggest an infection around the root canal site.
  3. Changes in Tooth Color
    • A darkening or discoloration of the tooth could be a sign of internal damage or infection.
    • Compare the color of the treated tooth with adjacent teeth to detect any noticeable differences.
  4. Persistent Discharge or Bad Breath
    • If you notice an ongoing discharge or experience persistent bad breath, it could be an indication of an infected root canal.
    • ay attention to any unusual odors emanating from the treated tooth or the surrounding area.
  5. Loose or Shifting Teeth
    • A previously treated root canal tooth should remain stable.
    • If you notice any shifting or loosening of the tooth, it's crucial to seek dental attention promptly.

Now that you’re equipped with how to identify potential issues, here are some tips for your patients to help them maintain the health of their root canals:

  1. Regular Dental Check-ups
    • Schedule routine dental visits to allow your dentist to assess the condition of your root canal and detect any concerns early on.
  2. Practice Good Oral Hygiene
    • Brush your teeth twice daily, floss regularly, and rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash.
    • Maintaining proper oral hygiene helps prevent infections and promotes overall dental health.
  3. Be Mindful of Your Diet
    • Limit your consumption of sugary and acidic foods and beverages, as they can contribute to tooth decay and damage.
    • Opt for a well-balanced diet that promotes oral health.
  4. Avoid Unnecessary Stress
    • Habits such as teeth grinding and clenching can place additional strain on your teeth, potentially affecting the health of a root canal.
    • Consider stress-reducing techniques, such as exercise or meditation, to minimize these habits.

As you embark on your professional journey as a new graduate, it's essential to stay vigilant when it comes to root canals. By utilizing your expertise and being attentive to any warning signs, you can ensure your patients' root canals remain healthy and free from complications.

Remember to encourage regular dental check-ups and emphasize the importance of proper oral hygiene to your patients. With your knowledge and dedication, you'll be able to provide top-notch care and maintain the smiles of your patients for years to come. Keep up the fantastic work, and congratulations again on reaching this milestone in your dental career!
